The debate on fridge magnets, do they really increase electricity consumption?

Magnets are one of the most popular souvenirs, both to keep for ourselves to remember a trip and to give to our loved ones. And the refrigerator door is usually the favorite place to put them. Recently, however, the rumor has spread that they can increase the cost of electricity and, therefore, the cost of the bill. Those who defend this theory assure that they increase the electromagnetic force of the electric field of the refrigerator. It's true?

Well no, this is a completely false statement. Electric companies such as Endesa denied this belief years ago, and others such as that the food we keep in our fridge can be harmful to our health. The magnetic fields of the magnets are so negligible that they can't even go through the refrigerator door.

Despite the fact that the energy of the magnets is very weak, what can happen is that they alter the system that controls the device. The materials used for these are magnetic (such as stainless steel, iron or aluminum coated with magnetic material). However, this could only be a problem if our refrigerator is of the latest generation, which is why some manufacturers recommend removing them.

A gesture that does affect the electrical consumption of the refrigerator is to open and close the door frequently, since the cold that accumulates inside is lost and it must generate more energy to cool the air again. Another factor that can affect the performance of our refrigerator is the touch screen, in the event that it has one, and there may be some functions of the device that allow us to reduce spending.

If what we want is to avoid high consumption, we must take into account other electrical appliances in addition to the refrigerator. Some tricks are washing clothes at a lower temperature, using the 'Eco' modes in the dishwasher or washing machine, using LED bulbs and taking into account the daylight hours.
