A research team from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) has created an interactive atlas that shows the "potential" for walking or cycling in Barcelona, Valencia, Palma and Granada, the UAB reported in a statement this Monday.

With the number of 'Atlas of the cities for interactive mobility', it has been made in collaboration with the universities of Granada, the Balearic Islands and the Polytechnic of Valencia and will be presented this Tuesday afternoon in an act on active mobility in the Palau Macaya in Barcelona.

The atlas explores the cities of Barcelona, Valencia, Palma de Mallorca and Granada to highlight the features that promote sustainable mobility on foot and by bicycle, and combines 57 variables to provide data on urban densities, green spaces, urban vitality and on the concept of "15-minute city".

The project coordinator, Carme Miralles-Guasch, stated that the objective of the atlas is "to be a rigorous and reliable source of information for a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle in urban environments.

This tool shows that "almost the entire" urban area of Barcelona has good walking conditions, with high residential densities, a large number of shops and many areas with pedestrian priority, which are concentrated in the historic center and the Sants districts. , Gràcia, Sarrià and El Clot.

Furthermore, Barcelona shows levels of active mobility potential "similar" to those presented by the cities of Palma de Mallorca, Valencia or Granada in 42% of the urban surface.

Both the cities of Barcelona and Granada have 76% of the surface with basic urban facilities and services within "a maximum of 15 minutes on foot", and it rises to 81% in Valencia but in Palma it is 38%.

Regarding the ease of traveling by bicycle, 22% of the city of Barcelona has a high cyclability, which is especially concentrated in the Eixample, and in Valencia it is 44% of the urban area, while in Granada is 10% and in Palma de Mallorca 12%.

The researchers have valued the walkability and accessibility of the cities studied, while they have considered that cyclability and accessibility to urban greenery are "pending matters."
