Wilt dalt de la Mola

La Mola is a mountain in the massif of Sant Llorenç del Munt. Its 1,104 meters make it the roof of the Vallès Occidental. In addition, it is an ideal place to tuck into a good fork breakfast or a lunch of grilled meat. In fact, one of the motivations to climb to the top is the rustic restaurant that comforts walkers with their meals after overcoming the difference in altitude. It has been operating for 57 years, despite the logistical difficulties involved in having to carry the groceries up and down on mules.

Now it has transpired that the Diputació de Barcelona has no intention of renewing the concession, which ends at the beginning of 2024. They allege environmental criteria, given that the mountain is within the boundary of the natural park of Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac , created in 1972. Gemma from the La Mola restaurant remembers that all these years they have not limited themselves to providing food, but have also taken care of the environment and heritage. Immediately many voices came out asking for its continuity for various reasons.

I dare to add one that is not gastronomic or landscape, but literary. In the mid-1980s, one of the restaurant managers worked double shifts. During the day he was waiting for the embers and the tables, but when it got dark he would take several dictionaries, including the Fabra and the English-Catalan one from Enciclopèdia, and he would type on an Olivetti to translate, in the light of a candle, a hilarious novel that would succeed like Coca-Cola.

The cook-translator was, and is, Lluís Comes i Arderiu, alias Sagal, and the novel in question is Wilt by Tom Sharpe in the Catalan version published by Columna in 1987. If the Provincial Council closes La Mola , it is very likely that the specter of Professor Henry Wilt will appear and cause some catastrophe of his own.
