Barcelona leads the reduction of crime among large Spanish cities

The city of Barcelona leads the reduction of crimes among the six Spanish cities with more than 500,000 inhabitants, with a decrease of 20% compared to 2019, according to a comparative report prepared by the Barcelona City Council based on data from the Crime Balance of the Ministry of Inside.

If the total number of criminal offenses registered is taken into account, Barcelona also leads the reduction with -16.4%, which is well above the drop of -3.55% in Madrid, which is the only one in the rest of the cities in more than 500,000 inhabitants in which crime falls.

Compared to 2019, crime grows in Valencia, 24.8%; in Malaga, 16.7%; in Zaragoza, 1.9% and in Seville, 0.5%.

It also highlights that Barcelona is the only city where crimes against people are reduced, which contrasts with the serious increase in these crimes throughout the State, particularly in Madrid.

In addition, the Catalan capital is also where the crime rate per 100,000 inhabitants falls the most: between 2019 and 2022 there have been 2,317 fewer conventional crimes per 100,000 inhabitants —9,246 in total. Among the five largest Spanish cities, Seville is the one with the highest rate: 11,665, 2,419 more than in Barcelona.

The Catalan capital is the only large city where attempted homicides have decreased by -14%, while they have increased in Madrid (97.5%), Seville (76.2%), Valencia (3.4%), Malaga (150%) and Zaragoza (850%), in the latter where they shoot up.

In Malaga they increased by 26.9%, in Seville, by 26.5%; in Valencia, 23.3% and in Madrid, 21.1%.

Barcelona is the big city in which crimes against sexual freedom grow the least, which rise in a general way in the six big cities, although the study indicates that in some the growth percentages are very high because the absolute number is low.

Thus, the data for Barcelona on these crimes is in line with the rest of the big cities, even being below it in the section on penetrative sexual assaults, with a growth of 15.2%, much less than in the rest of the capitals. .

In Seville, penetrative sexual assaults grew by 51.6%, in Madrid, 58%; in Valencia, 97.1%; in Malaga, 175% and in Zaragoza, 207.1%.

The rest of crimes against sexual freedom and indemnity grew in Barcelona by 30.8%, more than in Madrid (26.7%), Seville (15.9%), Valencia (9.8%), Malaga (27, 5%) and Zaragoza (28.6%).

Barcelona leads the reduction in crimes against property, which are the most numerous in all cities, and also, together with Madrid, it does so in all its categories.

The report indicates that outside of these two cities, it is difficult to detect a homogeneous trend, since there are sections that rise in some cities and fall in others.

It also stands out that the fall in Barcelona occurs in a range between 36.6% and 10%, while in Madrid this reduction does not reach 20% in any category.

In Barcelona, robberies with violence and intimidation fell by -10.3%; robberies with force in homes and other establishments, -27.9%; thefts, -29.1% and vehicle thefts, -36.5%.
