Quique is full of good intentions: he speaks in inclusive language, he rides a bicycle, he maintains an open relationship with his girlfriend and against his will so as not to be sexist, he recycles, he does not eat meat because livestock pollutes and he has entered politics to bring good to his fellow citizens. To people like the inhabitants of Cañada, a town in Teruel where people play tute, cultivate their fields with fertilizers, enjoy the jota and laugh at the films of Paco Martínez Soria.
Quique, played by Lalo Tenorio, is assigned to Cañada to teach a workshop on new masculinities and teach his neighbors how to cultivate urban gardens, among other advantages of the new policy. But as is natural, Quique's expectations come crashing down at the first opportunity with the deep-rooted customs of the place.
After Eight Basque Surnames (2014) and Eight Catalan Surnames (2015), Emilio Martínez-Lázaro repeats the formula with A Hipster in Empty Spain, which is something like Eight Maños Surnames and which today premiered in the official section of the Malaga Festival in competition. The film features the participation of Tito Valverde and Miguel Rellán in the roles of the townspeople who do not understand or share Quique's initiatives.
The film also features Berta Vázquez, as the tavern keeper who sympathizes and helps the newcomer, Macarena García and Paco León. A hipster in empty Spain lacks the surprise that the super blockbuster Eight Basque Surnames caused. She doesn't have the same grace either, but the formula is not completely exhausted. A hipster in empty Spain will not win the Biznaga de Oro in this contest, but he can be seen and has some good jokes that made the audience laugh at his first showing this morning.
