How to wash your silk shirts at home

One of the first lessons that an independent adult takes away is that there is no point in purchasing quality clothes if they are not cared for and washed properly. Something that is usually learned thanks to the advice of others, or the hard way. And this is one of the most typical mistakes when washing clothes: not taking into account the fabrics and how they should be treated. A very common case is that of silk shirts, a very soft and light material, hypoallergenic and breathable. However, you have to be especially careful about how you wash and iron it if you don't want it to spoil.

Washing silk shirts requires a little more attention than clothes made from other types of fabrics. However, it is not that the method is complicated, far from it. They can be washed at home both using the washing machine and manually. The only thing is that you have to take into account a series of steps to do it properly and without damaging the fabric.

To wash silk shirts and make them last as long as possible like the first day, you must follow some basic recommendations. The first thing will be to differentiate if you want to use the washing machine for cleaning or if you prefer to do it by hand, since both possibilities are feasible.

If you want to use the washing machine, the first thing to do is to use a protective mesh bag, where the silk shirt will be placed, so that it will be protected from the rest of the clothes. As for the detergent, it will be essential to use one specific for delicate garments or directly for clothes made of silk. The washing machine program must also be a special one for treating silk or for delicate garments. When finished, all that remains is to hang the silk shirt or let it dry on a flat surface.

If you prefer to wash by hand, the water used will be cold and only a few drops of special detergent for delicate garments will be added. The garment will soak for about three minutes; it can be moved around in the water to remove traces of dirt. Once this process is finished, it will be rinsed with plenty of cold water and the excess water will be removed with a towel. Finally, all that remains is for it to dry.

Silk shirts should always be ironed when they are still damp and turned inside out. Furthermore, since it is such a delicate garment, it is recommended to steam it instead of ironing it, since high temperatures could easily burn it. That is why it is best to use a steamer or a vertical iron.
