Two young people denounce a homophobic attack in the Basque Country for walking hand in hand

Two young people who were walking hand in hand through the festivities in the Gallarta neighborhood, in Abanto, ended up on the night of Saturday to Sunday in the hospital as a result of a homophobic attack. This is how one of them denounced it before the Ertzaintza, which is already studying the facts in order to determine if there could have been an ideological motivation in the aggression.

The events occurred, according to the complainants, around six in the morning last Sunday. The young people, under 30 years of age, circulated hand in hand through the festival grounds, an area that they were about to leave to go to their homes.

Then, a group of youngsters insulted them, first, and then shook and hit them several times. One of the two youths was punched, knocking him down and hitting his head on the ground. An ambulance later took him to the nearby Cruces hospital in Barakaldo. The young man has spent two nights in the hospital, where he continues to be observed.

The Abanto Zierbena City Council has condemned in a statement approved by the Board of Spokespersons the "case of homophobic violence suffered by two people from the municipality" and has held a protest rally.

Summoned by the City Council, dozens of people gathered yesterday to condemn "the homophobic attack suffered by two young people this weekend at parties in Gallarta." The concentration took place at 7:00 p.m. outside the town hall, next to "the benches of diversity" (painted with the colors of the rainbow in support of the LGTBI collective).

Previously, the Board of Spokesmen of the consistory (formed by PNV, PSE-EE, EH Bildu, the platform of independents Indaz-Azi and Elkarrekin Podemos) approved an institutional declaration in which it shows its "round condemnation of these events" and its " absolute solidarity and support for the victims and their families".

"The violence that in its different forms is exerted on the LGTBI collective supposes a serious attack against dignity and physical integrity and a serious and intolerable violation of human rights," they emphasize in the text.
