The waiting list of Alicante residents to obtain public housing grows by 58% in 9 months

The number of Alicante families on the waiting list to access public housing has increased by 58% in the last nine months. In total, the total number of petitioners amounts to 4,504, compared to the 2,847 applications that had been registered three quarters ago, according to data from the Department of Social Services, Equality and Housing.

The figure comes from the regional housing registry, which is the legal way to apply for public housing in the Valencian Community. And it has been known through the response given by the Ministry to a question posed by the Socialist Group in Les Corts.

In this regard, the spokesperson for the PSPV in the Alicante city council, Ana Barceló, has pointed out that “the increase in the number of petitioners for housing resources shows that more and more families are having difficulties accessing housing due to the rising cost of housing. rents and the high sale price of real estate.

The former Minister of Health criticizes that the municipal government chaired by Luis Barcala refuses to declare the city a "tensioned area", which would allow limits to be set on rental prices. Barceló assures that the city council "maintains the municipal waiting lists blocked and does not contemplate the construction of any social housing for this year."

According to a latest report from the real estate appraisal company Tinsa, the average price of housing in the city of Alicante is 1,556 euros per square meter (at the end of 2023), which represents an increase of 3.8% compared to the year former.

In the case of new construction, the average price rose at the beginning of this year to 2,741 euros per square meter, which represents an increase of 9.4% compared to January 2023 and an increase of 9% in just one quarter.

As far as rent is concerned, the latest analysis by Fotocasa places it in Alicante city at 12.33 euros per square meter per month. In the last quarter, the increase in income was somewhat contained in the capital of the province, as it was 1%, while other municipalities in the province registered notably greater increases: Santa Pola (12.0%), El Campello (5 .6%), Benidorm (5.5%), Torrevieja (5.1%) and Elx (5.1%),

It so happens that, in 2023, only 30% of the clients who bought a home through this firm in Alicante resorted to bank financing. In some municipalities on the Costa Blanca, such as Benidorm, Altea, Calpe, Moraira and Benissa, only between 4-5% of real estate clients request a mortgage.

In Alicante capital, 60% of the operations exceeded one million euros. And in the area that concentrates the most luxurious residences, Cabo Huertas, in 31% of cases buyers paid more than two million euros.
