The civil guards run over on the AP-4 were carrying out a regular control against drug trafficking

The Civil Guard agents who were run over this morning by an articulated truck on the AP-4 highway, near Los Palacios and Villafranca (Seville), were carrying out a regular control against drug trafficking.

The accident, which according to the first investigations does not seem intentional, has caused the death of two members of the Rapid Action Group (GAR), first corporal Eneko Lira Gómez, and the civil guard Juan Jesús López Álvarez, according to what sources have told EFE. of the armed institute. Four other civilians have died and three more GAR agents have been seriously injured.

The driver of the vehicle that caused the accident and who was arrested, has tested negative for alcohol and drugs. He drove a DAF XF 530 articulated truck with a trailer and transported tomatoes. He was making the journey from Algeciras to the Jaén town of Guarromán. He was accompanied by another person, and both were unharmed.

The sources consulted rule out intentionality in the attack. While the causes are being investigated, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) points to drowsiness or other distraction as the main cause. The three seriously injured have been transferred, one to the Macarena Hospital, another to Valme and a third to Trauma de Virgen del Rocío.

The Civil Guard has expressed, through its account on the social network X, its "painful goodbye" to the 6 people who have lost their lives in the incident. "Our condolences to the families, colleagues and friends. We wish a speedy recovery to the other 3 injured GAR civil guards," says the armed institute.
