Foreign Affairs confirms the death of the Spanish Iván Illarramendi at the hands of Hamas

Foreign Affairs confirms the death of the Spanish Iván Illarramendi at the hands of Hamas

The Spaniard Iván Illarramendi, who was kidnapped by Hamas, has died, as confirmed by diplomatic sources, who have not given more details about the exact circumstances.

Her death is added to that of the also Spanish Maya Villalobo, who was doing military service in Israel and was murdered on the same day of the attack by the Palestinian militias against Israel on October 7.

Illarramendi, 46 years old and a native of the Gipuzkoan town of Zarautz, lived with his Chilean wife in a kibbutz two kilometers from the Gaza Strip, where he was kidnapped without knowing his fate until now.

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, confirmed on October 17 that he was one of the hostages that Hamas had in its possession and demanded his release, as well as that of the remaining kidnapped people.

Days later, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, received a delegation of five families of people held in Gaza, including Illarramendi's brother.

On October 7, more than a thousand militants from the Islamist group Hamas infiltrated Israel in a terrorist attack that left some 1,400 dead, nearly 5,400 injured, more than 200 kidnapped and as many missing.

The other deceased Spaniard, with dual Spanish-Israeli nationality, was 19 years old and her father is a professor in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Seville. In her case, she was at the Nahal Oz base, near the Gaza border, doing military service.
