"You are educating yourself in everything that will make you respectful and responsible citizens." With these words this Wednesday, the King addressed the students of the Gumersindo de Azcárate Early Childhood and Primary Education School (CEIP), located in the neighborhood of Armunia, in León, which he visited, in the company of Queen Letizia, to present this center with the Princess of Girona School of the Year 2022 award, which they have won for their integrative and collaborative educational project.
After entering several classes and chatting with students, teachers and parents, the King highlighted "the potential and force of cohesion that education can have in society today."
The Princess of Girona Foundation (FPdGi) grants this award every year with the objective of recognizing the work of educational centers that go further and are committed to the development of talent and educational innovation in favor of a fairer society and a better world. . The president of the Princess of Girona Foundation, Francisco Belil, has specified that the objective of this "open door" center is to enhance the educational success of students with the development of computational thinking.
The Gumersindo Azcárate is located in the Leonese neighborhood of Armunia, a very socially disadvantaged area, with a large part of unemployed family members and others dedicated to street vending. Almost 40 percent of the almost 150 schoolchildren between 3 and 12 years old belong to the Gypsy ethnic group, and practically half are children from immigrant families, mostly from the Dominican Republic, Morocco, Bulgaria, Colombia, Ecuador, Romania, El Salvador, Nigeria, Togo and Angola. The school, in addition to promoting the inclusion of all its students in the Spanish educational system, has established channels for parents to get involved in school affairs.
The Kings have presented the leaders and students with the award in an event held at the sports center together with the families and the entire educational community.
