55 women murdered by their ex-partners or partners, the worst figure together with 2019 for 22 years

The researchers already pointed it out and have finally confirmed it. The 80-year-old woman who was found dead along with her husband on December 1 in Sigüeiro, in the A Coruña town hall of Oroso, was allegedly murdered by the 88-year-old man, who then committed suicide. With the confirmation of this case, the number of women murdered by gender violence in Spain rises to 55 so far this year and 1,237 since 2003, when data began to be collected. This is the worst figure for murders of women at the hands of their partners or ex-partners since 2011, only equaled by the figure for 2019.

The Minister of Equality, Ana Redondo García, and the Government delegate against Gender Violence, Victoria Rosell, have once again expressed their most absolute condemnation and rejection of this sexist murder and convey all their support to family and friends of the victim. Both the minister and the delegate ask for all efforts from the institutions, administrations and society as a whole to arrive on time and avoid more murders.

So far this year, a woman has been murdered every six days, leaving 56 children orphaned. The majority lived as a couple, but 23 of them were in the process of separating, which reveals that one of the most dangerous moments is when the woman decides to break up her relationship. 74.5% of the victims had not reported. And as for the aggressor, 14 of them committed suicide and 6 of them tried but failed.

Part of this data, as well as the possibility of improving the Viogen system, which provides protection to the victims who have reported, will be analyzed in the meeting that Minister Redondo will hold with the head of the Interior, Fernando Grande Marlaska, on the 7th of December. December.

In addition, Redondo announced that he has convened “a crisis cabinet, which is convened when there are more than five victims in the same month”, something that has already happened, and that he hopes that the meeting can be held in the coming days with representatives of the Community of Madrid and the Valencian Community to analyze these latest sexist murders that have occurred in those territories.

“We are also going to convene the interministerial Equality Commission, a commission provided for in the Equality Law, but which has not met since 2018 and it is very important that we meet because it will allow for improved coordination between all ministries. Together, we will be able to redouble our efforts to end this unbearable scourge that is gender violence,” said Redondo.
