AI chatbots respond more effectively if we express emotions when interacting with them

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly evolving, and one of the most interesting debates revolves around whether these machines can understand and respond to human emotions. A recent joint study by researchers from Microsoft and Peking University has brought new perspective to this question, highlighting the ability of chatbots to interact with human emotion. The research results point to an innovative approach: the incorporation of EmotionPrompts in the instructions given to language models, such as GPT-4.

This study challenges the common belief that AIs lack emotional intelligence. The theory behind EmotionPrompts is based on the notion that adding emotionally charged phrases at the end of instructions provides emotional context to chatbots.

Use a phrase like “this is very important for my career” or “are you sure that is your final answer?” Maybe it's worth taking another look" act as "emotional triggers", leading language models to offer higher quality responses.

The test results were surprising. In tests with 106 human raters, an average improvement of 10.9% in response quality was observed when EmotionPrompts were used. On more complex tasks designed to assess the linguistic understanding of models, such as those on the BIG-Bench dataset, performance improvements reached 115%. These results demonstrate the potential of this technique to boost the effectiveness of chatbots in communicating with humans.

However, the use of EmotionPrompts is not without ethical concerns. Although they improve the veracity of responses, chatbots sometimes respond in an overly confident manner and lack nuance. This issue highlights the need to proactively address the ethical implications of AI and ensure that harmful biases are not spread.

Still, EmotionPrompts is presented as an accessible and effective tool to improve the performance of language models, without requiring complex design or engineering. This could have a significant impact on AI, as allowing chatbots to respond more effectively to emotional stimuli would lead to better problem-solving.

Furthermore, incorporating emotions into interaction with chatbots could have applications in a variety of fields, from customer service to education and psychological assistance.
