Xavi leaves, the egos stay

In the business world there are also stressed people (I'm not surprised). One fine day, they decide to change their mood or they get bored and remember that their youthful dream was to go around the world on a scooter. In the corporate world, we used to say, there are also escapes - burnouts, for the experts -, but rarely among those who have to be fired (the companies are already in charge of deciding for them).

Xavi says he is leaving for the good of the club and because his body has told him enough and the first is the first. A little untimely it was, the farewell, dictated by a defeat against Villarreal that could have been regurgitated, the kind that would have allowed to fuel the opposition to this resignation. That's it, once it's done, it's done: Xavi doesn't continue, the president and the staff stay.

Is it positive to present the resignation at the head of a staff when there are five months of exams left? If FC Barcelona were a normal company, the board of directors would have suffered fatally what Xavi did because these things – the departures – are communicated but kept secret, so that a replacement can be sought in the best conditions. But FC Barcelona is not an ordinary company, secrets don't last long and Xavi is of the theory that the players will improve their performance, a theory specific to the world of football, about which Xavi knows so much and so little. From the outside, the truth is, it is difficult to imagine how this announcement can benefit the footballers, considering that there are no signs that they were making the bed. On the contrary: more pressure and attention to their performance (which is perhaps appropriate because football is theirs and their wages are theirs).

Klopp also announced in January that he would not continue at Liverpool, but his case has little to do with it: the work is done, the team and the organization are working and no one would have dismissed him on June 30. It is not a criticism of Xavi or a desire to crush a FC Barcelona legend, but we will agree that the formula of secretly agreeing to leave the club would have been better for the rest of the season.

And the players? Here's the problem. It's fine for them to have lunch together and conjure up - it's a saying - but there are few footballers who think about the club, the fans and the coach before themselves and their circumstances. They tend to be selfish, very selfish. And in this squad made up of improvisation and scraps there are illustrious veterans, very veterans, and illustrious youths, very youths. With a coach who will be professional until the last day but is a lame duck from today, we will have to see if the egos come together or if the egos are given a field by whoever can (that would be it).
