Xavier Trias has asked former president Carles Puigdemont, now a Junts per Catalunya candidate in the parliamentary elections on May 12, to once again be the president of the political party.
In June 2022, in Argelers, in the south of France, Puigdemont and Jordi Sànchez handed over the leadership of JxCat to Laura Borràs and Jordi Turull. However, in less than two years, the former Catalan president, still an MEP, has once again monopolized the media spotlight in the post-convergent space by taking a step forward and leading the negotiation with the PSOE for the investiture of Pedro Sánchez and the approval of the Amnesty law, first. And then for being the candidate for the presidency of the Generalitat in the May 12 elections, with a project that entrusts everything to his leadership. "Puigdemont has decided to become the leader of Junts and before he did not want to be," Trias stated in this regard.
Puigdemont indicated yesterday that if he is not president of the Generalitat after 12-M he will leave his seat and will not act as head of the opposition. He, too, does not plan to continue in active politics and recalled that for the figure of former presidents there is already an institutional space such as the offices of former presidents. However, Trias, who sees this bet as logical, assumes that he will be president of the party.
"I hope that at the party congress we all unanimously appoint Puigdemont as president of the party," the leader of Junts in Barcelona said today in statements to TV3. He now holds that position in the Borràs party, but the former convergent mayor was referring to the next congress, which on paper should be held in 2026, but it has always been assumed that it will arrive sooner.
"There is something in life that is very clear: you have leaders or you don't have leaders, and leaders must act as leaders," said Trias, who defended that JxCat needs "strong leadership" like that of the former president.
"We will hold a congress. I hope that in this congress we will all unanimously name President Puigdemont because he is our president. He is the president of our party," the former mayor concluded. However, it is not the first time that he has asked Puigdemont to take charge of the party. He did it a few days ago in an interview with Europa Press.
