The captain of the exercise in which two soldiers drowned in Cerro Muriano is dismissed

The Ministry of Defense has decreed the dismissal of the captain who directed the exercise in which two soldiers drowned on December 21, 2023 at the Cerro Muriano Base (Córdoba), as published this Thursday in the Official Defense Gazette ( BOD).

"In accordance with the provisions of section 1 of article 104 of Law 39/2007, of November 19, on the military career, Captain (INF) Don Ignacio Zúñiga Morillas, assigned to the 'La Reina' Infantry Regiment No. 2, ceases in his current destination and goes to active duty status pending assignment of destination, in Córdoba", reads the text.

According to Cadena Ser, the measure comes after a request to the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, by the relatives of the deceased soldiers, Carlos León and Miguel Ángel Jiménez, for the suspension of the accused officers from their duties.

The events for which the aforementioned captain is being investigated took place in an artificial lake at the Cerro Muriano military base, headquarters of the 'Guzmán el Bueno' in the morning and with very low temperatures, two soldiers died from drowning and others had to be treated for hypothermia.

Robles assured on January 25 in an extraordinary session of the Defense Commission of the Congress of Deputies, that, in the investigation of what happened, “we must go to the end in clarifying the facts no matter who falls. "The competent judge has to go to the end, we owe it to the deceased, to the corporal, to the soldier and their families."
