The art of the possible

At the end of the film Blade Runner, a character, the replicant, says: "I've seen things you wouldn't believe." They are the ones he saw in space. But we don't know what he would say if he had also seen the things that are happening lately in Spain and its politics. All the politicians in this country still have to feel their bodies to make sure they are not living in a dream or a nightmare, a bath in the metaverse or a season in Orion, like in the movie.

Who would have said, a year ago, that Feijóo would get closer to Junts, or they to Sánchez, and this to Bildu, and almost all to Puigdemont in his Xangri-La, in the confines of the impossible. In politics everything is around the corner. It seems that nothing is impossible. Isn't it said that "politics is the art of the possible"? A phrase attributed to Leibniz, who said that "we live in the best of all possible worlds" (what a pessimist). The first sentence was later corrected by Charles Maurras, who for an alleged realism said that "politics is the art of making possible what is necessary". But nothing more idealistic than that. Which policy always does "what is necessary"? What is meant by this? It seems that we mortals are more clear about what is impossible than what is necessary. This is why the students of May 1968 proclaimed: "Be realistic: ask for the impossible". So what is politics? Nothing better than Manuel Fraga's answer: "Politics is the art of the possible: to achieve it you have to try the impossible many times". It anticipated the motto of "to resist is to win" by Rajoy, Sánchez and Puigdemont.

The ends touch and they alone, with or without toad dinner, make strange bedfellows. It also draws attention when in politics, invoking the name of Max Weber, it is said that it is necessary to set aside "principles" in order to adhere to "responsibility". Naive who believes that. The politician follows neither: he always goes after power. Life for many is boring and they need "things to happen". But you don't need to look for them: follow the current political situation and you will also say: "I have seen things that you would not believe".
