A young 23-year-old German tourist died early this Tuesday in Arenal, Mallorca, after falling from the roof of the hotel where he was staying in the first accident of its kind this year. The National Police has opened an investigation to find out what could have happened and what reasons led the young tourist to climb to the roof, from where he fell for unknown reasons.
The police have gathered information from the establishment's workers, who have apparently confirmed that the young man arrived at dawn drunk after a night of partying in the area, one of the areas of the island where excess and drunken tourism proliferates. . The agents believe that the young man could have rushed in when he was trying to access his room from the roof, but this is one of the hypotheses that is being investigated.
Emergency services received information early in the morning that a man was lying on the ground, with no apparent signs of life. Several ambulances and police services immediately arrived in the area to treat the victim and verify what had happened. The hotel workers informed the police that the young man had checked into the establishment the day before, making it his first night in Mallorca.
The Arenal area, between the municipalities of Palma and Llucmajor, is one of those that is considered excessive tourism, along with Magaluf, also in Mallorca, and Sant Antoni, in Ibiza. The Balearic Government has approved specific regulations for these areas with restrictions on the sale of alcohol in shops and sanctions for those who promote drunken tourism.
Before the event became known, the Balearic Minister of Tourism, Jaume Bauzà, had referred to this regulation in Parliament as the Government of Marga Prohens is preparing a modification of this regulation. The councilor assured that the new regulations seek to "ensure that coexistence between tourists and residents is as pleasant and harmonious as possible".
“The intention of modifying the law on excesses is to improve and contribute to eradicating certain types of behavior to add value and quality to the destination,” the councilor stressed in Parliament. The opposition has warned that it will be very critical if the Government approves reductions in the harsh regulations that were approved during the time of Francina Armengol as president of the Balearic Islands.
