Gold Medal to Maria del Mar Bonet, Eliseu Climent and Marta Pessarrodona

Yesterday, the Government awarded the Gold Medal of the Generalitat of Catalonia to the Balearic singer-songwriter Maria del Mar Bonet, the Valencian publisher Eliseu Climent and the Catalan poet Marta Pessarrodona, for their commitment to the Catalan language and culture. In fact, with these awards, the Executive of Pere Aragonès wants to highlight, among others, the different accents of Catalan.

The awards ceremony took place in Margarita Xirgu Square, in Barcelona, in front of the Teatre Lliure. With the delivery of the medals, the Government gives the start to the institutional celebration of the National Day of Catalonia.

The president of the Generalitat stressed the idea that Catalonia is “a plural and diverse country.” “We have made a lot of progress thanks to the ability to incorporate accents,” he stated, in a Catalonia that has close to eight million inhabitants. “The language is and must continue to be the pillar of the Catalan nation,” he concluded.
