Feijóo and Abascal will go to the protest against the Barcelona amnesty

The PP will participate in all calls organized against the amnesty, and more so if the initiative comes from civil society. The rejection of the amnesty was the main argument of Alberto Núñez Feijóo in the debate of his failed investiture to defend his presidency as an alternative to Pedro Sánchez. The first opportunity to join one of these calls is the demonstration organized by Societat Civil Catalana (SCC) on Sunday in Barcelona, against the amnesty.

Yesterday, 19 days after the announcement of the protest, the PP announced that Núñez Feijóo will attend the march. Until now the PP did not say yes or no, but that "it depended on the agenda". After yesterday's steering committee meeting, the general coordinator of the PP, Elías Bendodo, announced the attendance of the popular leader. In fact, yesterday morning the PP of Catalonia did not know if the popular leader would be present. Around midday, Feijóo confirmed his presence on his X account, formerly Twitter: “We will be there. No amnesty. No to the inequality of the Spanish", he proclaimed.

Of course, Bendodo made it clear that Feijóo will go "as another citizen". In other words, the PP, as an organization, will not be part of the march, as it did on other occasions when the leadership decided that it should attend, or that a certain member of the leadership represented the party. Now Feijóo will go, as will other popular leaders, "anyone can go", Bendodo emphasized yesterday.

This is intended to make it clear that the PP is autonomous, that when it wants to protest it does so, as happened on October 24 in Madrid, in an act, in this case yes, of the PP. Nor will the PP mobilize the entire structure to fill the streets of Barcelona. He hopes that his voters and militants will do so, but not at a call from the PP, but from Societat Civil Catalana.

For example, the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, already announced last week that she will go to Barcelona on Sunday, like the deputy Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo, but the PP has not given instructions for its regional presidents to be in the concentration, as it did with the event in Madrid.

The popular people do not want to be prominent in the event, in which the president of Vox, Santiago Abascal, will also be present. If Feijóo meets Abascal, he will greet him, but they will not go together. There will be no other photo of, like the one that took place in 2019 against the Government of Pedro Sánchez, with the leader of the PP, then Pablo Casado, and those of Vox, Cs and UPyD leading the rally. This in Génova is clear that it will not be repeated.

With its eyes on this demonstration in Barcelona, and the day before its audience with the King in the new round of contacts to appoint candidates, the PP reiterates Feijóo's speech in his failed investiture, and asks Pedro Sánchez " that he leave the ambiguity and silence" and say "if he is ready to promote an amnesty law, what are the technical details that the pro-independence people say are missing", and if he is ready to promote a referendum on self-determination, " how and in what form".

The PP warn that "the Spanish are not stupid", and warn that even if they call it a "consultation", "it is a referendum on self-determination", which is not possible, according to the Constitution. Bendodo also demanded from Sánchez that the possible referendum "is not the excuse to cover up the amnesty", and the citizens, the PP coordinator stressed, "we will not swallow the fact that the referendum is being talked about without talking about an amnesty which is already done".
