'El cine' in Massacusetts, far from the Paradiso cinema

Cinema can be honored in many ways, also with a drama with humorous points such as El cine, by Annie Baker, a multi-award winning piece in the United States, which is now coming to Barcelona, at the Teatre Lliure, translated by Neus Bonilla Benages and direction by Marilia Samper.

David Marcé, one of the performers, is precisely the one who assures that, "despite the drama, it is a tribute to cinema". We are in a town in Massachusetts, in a movie theater where they offer a reruns program with a 35 mm analog camera.

The cinema has not yet made the transition to digital, it's in shambles, roaring, and three dwarfs make a living doing all the roles of the auca: cleaning, selling tickets, showing the films, acting as ushers. ..

The director points out: "I liked that it portrayed very well the current situation of job instability and vital apathy, but above all I was fascinated by the amount of silence that extends throughout the work, which represents a challenge to the time to direct and also a space where you can find everything that is hidden beyond words".

"Of the three characters, one has an interest in this 35 mm cinema, but the others don't - Marcé explains -. From the public, everyone will see their ghosts, the inability to communicate and to be happy in this capitalist world, loneliness."

"The author, Annie Baker, serves it in such a crude way, that it becomes comical", concludes the actor. The film can be seen from November 29 to December 17 at the Teatre Lliure de Gràcia, performed by Sara Diego Boladeras, David Marcé and Roger Torns Baltà.
