A hundred immigrants try to jump over the Melilla fence without success

A hundred young immigrants have tried to enter Melilla irregularly on Monday night by jumping the border fence between Spain and Morocco in the autonomous city, although the security forces of the neighboring country have intercepted them, preventing them from reaching the fence. . This is the first mass jump attempt that has occurred on the Melilla fence in almost a year and a half, after the one on June 24, 2022, which resulted in 23 deaths on the Moroccan side of the fence, according to the authorities of that country.

According to sources from the Government Delegation in Melilla, this entry attempt occurred in the vicinity of the Barrio Chino border crossing, the same area where the tragic attempt to jump over the fence on 24-J last year took place. .

The Civil Guard has carried out a significant deployment of patrols in the Barrio Chino area as a result of this attempt to approach the border perimeter, during which some detonations could be heard from the urban area of Melilla on the other side of the fence. .

The Government Delegation in Melilla has indicated that "as a consequence of this episode", the Civil Guard will maintain the security device deployed as a preventive measure "in case a similar situation occurs in the coming hours."

After 24-J, irregular entry attempts through the Melilla fence have been very limited due to the strong security control to which it has been subjected, giving rise, for the first time, to two entries of migrants who avoided the obstacles by flying over the paragliding perimeter, one in December 2022 and another barely a month ago.

The difficulty of jumping the fence has translated into strong migratory pressure by sea, carried out mainly by Moroccan citizens due to the impossibility of crossing the land border crossing to Melilla since its reopening on May 17, 2022 due to the need for a visa. .
