Mourning in Rubí for the death of two hikers in the Pyrenees

The Rubí City Council has decreed this morning three days of mourning for the death of two residents of the town, aged 56 and 54, who lost their lives last weekend when they were surprised by a snow storm, on the French slope of the Pyrenees. The hikers had started their route on Friday, in the area of the Carlit massif, and on Saturday they called by phone asking for help but without being able to give a precise location. Three days later, the Bolquère High Mountain Gendarmerie Platoon (PGHM) confirmed that it had found their frozen bodies near Tossal Colomer.

A spokesperson for the police force explained to EFE that the bodies were transferred to a hospital by a Civil Protection helicopter, based in Perpignan, after having been sighted by another PGHM helicopter when the weather conditions allowed their flight, something that was not possible during the weekend.

The very adverse weather conditions in the area, with winds of 120 kilometers per hour and temperatures of fifteen degrees below zero, made it completely impossible for the helicopters to fly, so a search for teams began on foot, but did not yield results. It was not until yesterday, with more favorable weather to fly over the area, that the two men, belonging to the DonaAlpina del Vallès club and federated in the FEEC, were located by a PGHM helicopter.
