Iranian singer who composed an anthem after the death of Mahsa Amini sentenced to almost four years

New attack on freedom of expression in Iran. The Iranian singer Shervin Hajipour, winner of a Grammy award for a song tribute to the protests unleashed after the death of the young Mahsa Amini in 2022, has been sentenced to three years and eight months in prison for positioning himself against the system and inciting riots .

The 26-year-old singer has confirmed on his social networks that he is prohibited from leaving the country for at least two years and must compose songs referring to "crimes against humanity in the United States." The Iranian authorities have not commented on this ruling.

Hajipour gave voice with his music to the thousands of people who took to the streets after the death of Amini, who died in custody after being arrested for wearing her veil incorrectly.

Shortly after the song was published, Baraye was arrested and publicly apologized, although in January of this year he again published a new critical song.
