Fourth heat wave of summer: more than 40ºC since Sunday and storms on Wednesday

Europe is facing a new episode of extreme heat that will reach the Swiss Alps, where the heat will rise and zero degrees are expected - something unprecedented - at 5,300 meters. Thermometers shoot up again with very high temperatures for this time of year in countries like Italy, France or Greece. In Spain Spain will leave more than 40ºC from Sunday to Wednesday, when there will be storms.

A rise in temperatures in Europe that is not common at this time of year, in the last stretch of what is considered a meteorological summer in the northern hemisphere, which runs from June 1 to August 31, and which comes after July set a record in the thermometers of half the world. August is also very hot for the time in many European countries, where, in addition to high daytime temperatures, there are more and more tropical nights (above 20 degrees) or even torrid (above 30 degrees). 25).

In Spain, from Sunday to Tuesday the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) expects maximums of more than 40ºC at points in the Ebro and Guadalquivir valleys, and minimums of more than 25ºC at points in the southern half, central zone and Ebro valley. .

In the coming days there will be a progressive rise in temperatures, due to strong insolation over a warm and stable air mass, which will give rise to a heat wave episode starting on Sunday, which will affect large areas of the Peninsula, especially the northeast quadrant of the peninsula and the basins of the great rivers.

Galicia, the Cantabrian Sea and the Mediterranean area will probably not be affected by this situation, which will last until at least Tuesday, August 22. The AEMET specifies that this episode has a degree of probability between 40% and 70%.

During Saturday, a rise in temperatures will begin on the Atlantic slope that will remain and extend to the rest of the areas of the Peninsula, except in the southeast of the peninsula and the Andalusian Mediterranean, where they will drop on Sunday. On Sunday temperatures will exceed 36-38ºC in large areas of the southern half, central and northeastern peninsula and even 40ºC will be reached in points of the Ebro valley and the Guadalquivir.

In the Canary Islands, this weekend an increase in medium and high cloudiness is expected and the entry of high haze, which will mainly affect the eastern islands. In the south of the Canary Islands, 40ºC will be exceeded in the southwest quadrant and northeast depressions

On Monday the thermal rise will continue slightly in general. It is probable that 40ºC will be reached or exceeded in large areas of the southwest quadrant and the northeast quadrant, and 35-37ºC in areas of the northern and southern plateau of Galicia. No significant changes are expected on Tuesday, with temperatures similar to the previous day.

The minimum temperatures will also be very high during this episode, with nights known as tropical, above 20ºC, and even above 23-25ºC in parts of the southern half, the central area and the Ebro valley.

As of Wednesday there is a high uncertainty in the prediction as it is probable that the atmosphere will become unstable due to the appearance of showers and storms in areas of the interior of the peninsula, which will give rise to a drop in temperatures that, if it occurs, will continue the following days .

Looking ahead to the following week, between August and September (from August 28 to September 3, the AEMET has indicated that it does not show a clear trend in terms of temperatures or rainfall. In any case, it could be more warm and rainy than normal in peninsular coastal strips and archipelagos.
