The precariousness of the waiter (and the actor)

After the success of Sant Pere el farsant, the kids from La Ludwig Band transmute into playwrights and actors to tell the story of a unique waiter, “who inherits a bar and loses the best years of his life.” It is Artemi, the cambrer abstemi, that the Col·lectiu Pedant a Missa i Repicant has created with the support of La Perla 29.

The company celebrates having been able to work professionally, “with a month to rehearse in a room and not just anywhere,” says Quim Carandell. He is half of the couple of playwrights that he forms with Lluc Valverde, who explains: “We have done many jobs, and many actors have played waiters. While people are having a good time, we sell our happiness for a meager salary. From here we came up with the character of Artemi who, due to inheritances and notaries, something that La Perla really likes, has to run a bar.”

Carandell continues: “ Lluc creates good protagonists. We have added little songs to it and written it in verse. The verse helps to memorize the text, and since we are fans of Calderón de la Barca, with the verse we get a little closer to him. “Oriol Broggi asked us to turn La Perla upside down, because he has gotten older and needs new stimuli.”

“If you don't do more than 18 performances it's because you had other commitments,” says the director of La Perla 29. Valverde answers: “Yes, we are busy acting as waiters and dining room monitors.” And he concludes: “I don't think it is a militant work, but it does explain things with humor.”
