This increase has turned olive oil into a luxury product, which many cannot afford. The situation is so delicate for some families that there have even been robberies in supermarkets.
Faced with these thefts, the chains have decided to shield themselves, such as a Summa supermarket, located in the Nervión neighborhood of Seville. This establishment has decided to replace the bottles and jugs of extra virgin olive oil with photographs, according to Informativos Telecinco.
This is the latest strategy of the supermarket, which, faced with the "everyday" thefts of this product, tried others such as changing the content for water. However, the robberies continued to occur.
In this way, the customer who wants to buy a bottle of olive oil has to go to the checkout with the photograph. From here, the worker will take it out of the warehouse, guarded by the company's staff.
