Guide to caring for your outdoor hydrangeas this summer

Few gardens are more spectacular to look at than one of colorful hydrangeas, with their large, showy flowers and leafy branches. Caring for hydrangeas is a simple task, since their care is simple. However, it requires some dedication, a responsibility that undoubtedly increases during the hottest season of the year. In summer, these plants need special attention to maintain their beauty, especially if they are outdoors.

Large, brightly colored and with a pleasant aroma, hydrangea flowers can last until October if the necessary care is given to the plant. To keep them of a good size, healthy and with a perfect appearance, these are the cares that must be dedicated to them during the hottest season.

As you can imagine, one of the keys for hydrangeas to look perfect despite heat waves has to do with watering. This practice should become something frequent, although it will depend on the area and the climate, it could perfectly be a daily necessity. To find out, it will be necessary to look at the soil and check its state of humidity, in this way an appropriate irrigation frequency can be determined. However, it must not be forgotten that waterlogging should never occur, since it will not be beneficial for the hydrangea, on the contrary.

As it is their flowering stage, in which they continue to grow and develop, it will be important to provide them with fertilizers that help them in this process. In this season, hydrangeas will need to keep their energy reserves to the maximum, so they will require extra help. These products will always be applied according to the manufacturer's instructions and specifications.

Another aspect that must be taken care of to keep hydrangeas healthy in summer has to do with soil aeration. In this way, it is possible for the roots to remain oxygenated and the possibility of producing waterlogging is avoided. The degree of cleanliness of the soil is also relevant, that is, that there are no remains of leaves, flowers or vegetables. Weeds should be removed and the area kept clear and free of obstacles to favor the development of the plant.

Light exposure is a very important issue for hydrangeas, since ideally they do not receive it very directly. Especially during the summer, when its intensity and exposure hours increase considerably. This is something that will have to be taken into account before planting them or, if they are in pots, to move them to shaded spaces before the hot season arrives. Otherwise, they could get burned.
