Toyota explores new design possibilities for its electric future with the FT-3e and FT-Se prototypes

Within the framework of its Kenshiki 2023 forum, held a few days ago in Brussels - an annual event to publicize the company's future projects - Toyota offered a preview of the design and technology possibilities that the Asian firm is exploring to its new generation battery electric vehicles. It did so through two prototypes, the FT-3e and the FT-Se.

The first of them, shown for the first time in Europe, incorporates Toyota's versatile next-generation BEV architecture that allows the creation of a wide variety of products designed to achieve the lowest possible weight and optimal aerodynamic behavior for greater efficiency and autonomy. , and at the same time, prioritize the sustainable use of resources.

The FT-3e is a prototype equipped with a wide range of future technologies that go beyond seeking only carbon-neutral mobility to connect with society, acting as a means of data and energy transfer, from the vehicle itself or its surroundings.

It features a fluid design that combines advanced styling and aesthetics with the simplest possible surfaces and body lines. Regarding its exterior dimensions, it measures 4.86 m long, 1.95 m wide and 1.59 m high, with a wheelbase of 3 meters, making it 17.7 cm longer, 14, 5 cm wider and 5.5 cm lower than the current Toyota bZ4X.

Inside, with five seats, it has digital screens that extend from the lower part of the body to the upper part of the doors. These screens display information as the driver approaches the vehicle, relating, for example, to the state of battery charge or the interior temperature and air quality.

For its part, the FT-Se, whose name stands for “Toyota sports car with an electric future”, presents a surprisingly fluid and slender silhouette, with a wide, low and powerful stance, and decisive lines inspired by advanced aerodynamics.

Integrating the knowledge accumulated by Toyota Gazoo Racing in its mission to create more efficient vehicles through its participation in motorsports competitions, the FT-Se is a prototype of a high-performance 100% electric two-seater sports car for a new carbon-neutral era.

With a height of just 1.22 m, it is reminiscent of classic sports cars, while its 1.89 m width gives it a decisive presence, accentuated by an avant-garde front design that combines soft curves with aggressive lines. Measuring 4.38 m in length, its stylized silhouette is made up of aerodynamic lines and unique trapezoidal shapes topped by an evocative rear spoiler.

Inside, the next-generation cabin features intuitive controls and an immersive driving experience with a low-height dashboard for maximum visibility. In the knee area, a new padded design protects the driver and passengers from centrifugal forces when driving.

On the other hand, advances in the fields of electrification and smart technologies have made it possible to implement the most recent evolutions in batteries, low weight and high energy density, a key element to multiply the performance of FT-Se.

This factor, together with the reduction in the size and weight of components of the electric motor, transmission and air conditioning unit, open new possibilities to improve the qualities of traditional sports cars, such as cornering stability, handling response and braking efficiency.
