What do children ask for to improve their well-being?

The Children's Agenda is a document that includes eleven demands, thirty proposals and more than one hundred ideas to improve the well-being of children in the city. It is the result of a research process that begins with the Survey of Subjective Well-being of Children in Barcelona, which in this edition more than five thousand boys and girls between 8 and 11 years old responded to, and continues with the participatory workshops to co-interpret the results of the survey and prepare proposals to improve well-being.

The eleven demands of boys and girls to improve the well-being of children are the following:

More help with screens and concern for the planet

Boys and girls say that they like to use screens, but they are also aware of some of their risks, which is why they ask adults to help them use them safely so as not to get hooked. Regarding the demand to care for the planet, these are concerns in both the environmental and social justice spheres.

In addition to these two thematic lines, there are new topics to continue advancing in the search for the well-being of children, such as, for example, sexual diversity and gender inequalities from childhood, racism and the involvement of families with school .

The event is part of the events of the European Capital of Democracy, which Barcelona holds from September 2023 to September 2024. Although children do not have the right to vote, they do have the right to be heard and have their opinions taken into account.

In this new edition, boys and girls will reflect on the right to equality and its violations through dynamics that will be structured into four main axes: gender and sexual orientation; provenance, religion and origin; capabilities, and social equity.

As a novelty this year, the students have carried out a prior research process in the form of a gymkhana in their neighborhood or district with the aim of detecting the people who work in this right, how they do it and what situations or actions do not favor it. From this action a report has emerged with proposals for improvement that have already been presented to the corresponding district headquarters.

The reading of the proclamation will be carried out by boys and girls representing the different educational centers on February 14, in front of the city mayor, coinciding with the start of the Santa Eulàlia Festival.

Right to participation of children

The Pregón de la Infancia is an educational program to encourage the promotion and dissemination of children's rights and the recognition of boys and girls as full-fledged citizens, as stated in the Convention on the Rights of Children. .

The program emphasizes the importance of values such as coexistence and participation in the city and enhances the involvement of students in improving their environment and the construction of the city; Furthermore, it is a way to bring children closer to Barcelona institutions.
