Warm African air raises temperatures in southern and Mediterranean areas this week

The last week of March will be characterized by an increase in temperatures in most of Spain, especially in the South and in the Mediterranean area, where the sun and good weather will prevail until the weekend.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) forecasts a slight shift in the anticyclonic situation in Spain that will result in the entry of a mass of warm air from Africa. This will give rise to a rise in temperatures, which will be between 4 and 5 degrees above average in the southern and Mediterranean regions. All this will happen until Saturday, when temperatures will return to normal.

"There is hot air coming from North Africa and it is very hot air," says José Luis Camacho, Aemet's territorial delegate in Catalonia, referring to all of Spain.

"There has always been air intrusion from Africa, but in recent years the air has been getting hotter," adds the meteorologist, who points out that the west wind is going to be another factor that adds some degree of temperature in these geographical areas. hot," he adds.

Temperatures will rise on Tuesday throughout the Peninsula except for the eastern coast, while between Wednesday and Friday they will continue to rise on the Mediterranean façade until they drop significantly over the weekend.

With this panorama, a heat characteristic of the beginning of summer will come tomorrow, with 10 to 15 ºC more than usual, in the eastern Cantabrian and areas of the Southern Plateau. Thus, on Wednesday 31 ºC is expected in Bilbao and Seville. On Thursday there will be 33 ºC in Murcia, 32 ºC in Valencia and 31 ºC in Seville and Zaragoza. And on Friday it could be 33 ºC in Murcia, 32 ºC in Valencia and 30 ºC in Alicante, Córdoba and Seville.

In Catalonia, "the whole week, until Sunday, it will be anticyclonic, without precipitation and with general sun dominance," says Santi Segalà, head of forecasting at the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya. "Temperatures will tend to rise, especially during the day", and will reach their peak between Wednesday and Friday." he adds.

They will be warmer inland, while on the coast they may be determined by winds from the sea, and the latter "is still cold." During the week "at most, there will be some clouds in the Pyrenees, little, and some low clouds on the coast, but the lack of precipitation will continue," adds Segalà.

In Catalonia, the only predicted Atlantic front could drop some precipitation, which would be noticeable between Sunday and Monday, with rain in the Pyrenees and points in western Catalonia. All the prediction models indicate that in Catalonia the next four weeks, as a whole, "will be drier than normal", although it is possible that, as an exception, there will be "slight rainfall above the average in the week of 17 to April 23.

Regarding this weekend, it is still early for a somewhat accurate weather forecast. However, very cloudy skies are expected on Saturday in the northern half of the peninsula, with isolated rainfall in the first half of the day, and temperatures will drop significantly in the northeastern third of the peninsula.

On Sunday, the rains would be restricted to the Pyrenean area and the temperature drop would continue in the eastern half of the peninsula. In the Canary Islands the trade wind will continue to blow and the skies will continue to be practically clear.
