Velma comes out of the closet in the new 'Scooby-Doo' movie

The new movie from the Scooby-Doo universe, Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!, released this Tuesday on Amazon Prime, confirms what many fans suspected: Velma Dinkley's sexual orientation.

The teenager with the square glasses and the orange sweater was conceived as a lesbian girl from the first productions in the early seventies.

In various scenes of Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! it shows the youngest and most intelligent of the gang in love with the character of Coco Diablo, a fashion designer with blonde hair and a slim figure.

The scenes of the romance between Velma and Coco Diablo caused a stir on social networks. However, in recent years Warner Bros Pictures, the studio of the iconic saga, had already reported on Dinkley's homosexuality.

"In 2001, Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script, but the studio kept glossing her over and eventually even had a boyfriend (in the sequel)," James Gunn, screenwriter of the first non-animated films in the saga, tweeted two years ago.

Tony Cervone, producer and supervisor of the series Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated (2010) also touched on the character's sexual orientation. "[Velma] is not bisexual, she is homosexual," he wrote in a post on her Instagram profile during Pride Month 2020.

"We always planned for Velma to act a little bit out of character when she was dating Shaggy because that relationship just wasn't right for her," Cervone added. Her real intention was for the character of Marcie Fleach, Velma's friend and former rival, to be her partner.

The latest chapter of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated aired on April 5, 2013, but this intimate relationship was never fully resolved. Now, more than nine years later, fans of the franchise have officially confirmed that young Velma Dinkley is a lesbian.
