The scientist and former president of the CSIC, Emilio Lora-Tamayo, dies

The former president of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) between 2003 and 2004 and also between 2012 and 2017, Emilio Lora-Tamayo, life rector of the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP), has died today at the age of 73.

The CSIC itself has reported in -Tamayo, who highlights “his contribution to the prestige of the UIMP.”

Hours before, the CSIC expressed its regret at having to announce the death of its former president: "from the scientific community we want to accompany his family and friends in these sad moments and thank Emilio for his work in favor of science."

For her part, the mayor has highlighted "the intellectual and professional career of the man who was rector of the Menéndez Pelayo International University during the 2017/2018 academic year, and named honorary rector for life of the institution in 2022."

"From the Santander City Council we want to accompany his family and friends in these sad moments and thank Emilio Lora-Tamayo for his work in favor of the Menéndez Pelayo International University and everything it represents for our city."

He has also highlighted his contribution to the prestige of the UIMP during his work at the head of the institution.

A contribution that, as the councilor has highlighted, was confirmed with his appointment as honorary rector for life on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the UIMP.

Likewise, he has valued the close collaboration that Lora-Tamayo maintained with the Santander City Council as head of the international university, and his contribution to the international projection of the city through its summer courses.

The Camilo José Cela University (UCJC) has also "deeply" regretted the death of Professor Emilio Lora-Tamayo, who was rector of that institution between 2019 and 2023.

Last November, the UCJC named him honorary rector for life and presented him with the UCJC gold medal, in an event presided over by Her Majesty Queen Sofía and attended by numerous personalities from the world of science, research and culture.
