The reservoirs of the basins of Catalonia, drier than those of Andalusia, Murcia and Valencia

The reservoirs in the internal basins of Catalonia register a new negative figure this week. The total amount of water accumulated in these nine reservoirs managed by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) reaches only 16.9% of their total capacity (as of December 27), that is, they accumulate barely 117.9 hm³, compared to a maximum volume estimated at 694.45 hm³. Comparing with historical figures, the ACA recalls that the average of the last 10 years was 479.69 hm³ for this same time of year and that a year ago, when the drought was already beginning to be warned, the reserves were 217 .63 hm³.

The figures constantly updated by the ACA show a situation even worse than the weekly state-wide balance published (in this case, on December 26) by the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (Miteco), which places the reservoirs of the internal basins of Catalonia at 17.1% of their capacity. With these ministerial data it is confirmed that the internal basins of Catalonia now have a percentage of dammed water (in relation to their total capacity) lower than that of the Júcar basins (which are at 46% of their reservoir capacity), Guadiana (26.7%), Guadalquivir (19.3%), Andalusian Mediterranean basins (19.2%) and Segura (19.1%).

The water reserves in the reservoirs created to supply a good part of the citizens of the regions of Barcelona and Girona have continued to decrease almost constantly for months, mainly due to low rainfall. Due to the statistics and the visual impacts and the availability of supply, the situation of the Sau reservoir draws attention, which this week is at only 8.91% of its capacity. Among the smaller reservoirs, Siurana stands out, with 3.5% of its capacity, and Riudecanyes, with 3.27%. In the extreme northeast, the Darnius - Boadella reservoir now accumulates only 19.53 hm³, that is, 13.24% of its total capacity.
