The new street signs of García Albiol

The Badalona City Council has unraveled a project that had been in a drawer for more than two years and is endowed with 1.2 million euros. It involves changing all the city's street signs, most of which are in poor condition and illegible.

“My face falls with shame when I walk through the neighborhoods and see the street signs,” says the mayor, Xavier Garcia Albiol. “Many are illegible and rusty,” so they are also elements that demonstrate “the state of neglect in which we have found the city.”

The license plates in poor condition should have been replaced 40 years ago, so the previous government provided an allocation of 1.2 million euros and promoted a project “that, like many, was left in a drawer.” Now, the Albiol government has rescued the project from the 2020 investment item.

The current executive chose to modify the color, design and typography, which evokes Roman writing, in a clear exaltation of the past, of ancient Baetulo.

The project is in the phase of drafting the technical specifications to unravel the economic part.

The new image of the Badalona street signs, which will replace the current ones, which were placed in 1981, are two different models. The first, which will be extended on all roads in the city, is a brown metal plate with gold letters. The text indicates the neighborhood and the name of the street next to the city shield.

The second model, an idea generated by the current executive, is made of whitish stone and has the same design, with dark brown letters, which will be placed in the most emblematic areas of the city, such as squares and main avenues.

It is estimated that about 3,000 plates will be replaced based on the last count that was carried out in 1981 and which detected 2,893 signs on the streets.
