The mysterious case of Reyes Maroto

B etween agonizing polls that fill the last week of the campaign with soccer emotion and sophisticated analyzes of what is to come, two images were a trend yesterday on social networks: the hoax about the dirt in the Plaza Mayor in Madrid after the massive central rally of Más Madrid on Saturday, and the queues to see José María Aznar in Murcia announcing the Apocalypse. The photos of the dirt in the Plaza Mayor were not the result of the Mónica García and Rita Maestre rally, but of the visit of Celtic from Glasgow to play a Champions League match, but the fact that they were viralized by right-wing and far-right accounts indicates that the powerful act of Más Madrid caused restlessness and stinging in their rivals.

It is considered a certain fact that attendance at rallies speaks more about the organic health of the parties and their organizational muscle than their expectations of voting, but since the bipartisanship broke down, the new formations do not have the organic backstage of its predecessors, so its convening power does speak of the environment. And even in the old games there are singularities in which it is possible to appreciate aromas of the moment. Thus, Aznar's success in Murcia not only certifies the status of favorite of the PP in the region, but also indicates that his militancy supports the tremendous speech of the former president, aligned with the Trumpism of Isabel Díaz Ayuso, and abjures the unborn moderantism of Alberto Núñez Feijóo.

In the case of the strangest political subject in this campaign, Vice President Yolanda Díaz –who travels the country supporting lists of Unidas Podemos and formations likely to join her project of generals–, her rallies are always crowded, and that has unleashed a farce behind the scenes, since the leaders of Podemos who visit the same squares strive for strategies that prevent comparison. Especially after, at the start of the campaign, the central act of Podemos in the Madrid neighborhood of Orcasitas brought together just a few dozen people while, at the same time, IU gathered a thousand in Mieres around Díaz.

But the true mystery of this campaign are the images of desolation that circulate through messengers and social networks in the acts of the PSOE candidate for mayor of Madrid, former minister Reyes Maroto. Whether dancing with Brazilian dancers or giving a rally on a crate in Moratalaz or Puente de Vallecas, there never seems to be more than twenty people around her.

This helplessness does not speak of his voting expectations – they are not spectacular, but neither are they dramatic – nor of the strength of the socialist municipal groups, but rather suggests that they have turned their backs on him. If so, Covadonga Tomé, the Podemos candidate for the presidency of the Principality of Asturias, is no longer the only one that this 28-M is running for some acronyms that hate her and do everything possible to make us notice it.
