The man who was shot by a mosso while fleeing in a stolen car dies

The man who on Saturday morning was shot by an Esquadra mosso when he was fleeing on the A-7 motorway, aboard a previously stolen car in the town of Amposta, in the Montsià region, died a few hours later, at night, at the Joan XXIII hospital in Tarragona, as confirmed yesterday by the regional police in a statement.

The individual had entered the health center in critical condition, after an agent shot him with his legal weapon at the time he tried to attack the patrol that stopped him at a police checkpoint in the municipal area of Vandellòs and the 'Hospitalet de l'Infant (Baix Camp), after a pursuit on the aforementioned motorway, according to the information provided by the Mossos d'Esquadra.

The criminal investigation area of the Catalan police has taken charge of the case and, as happens in this type of situation in which the regulation weapon is used, the department of internal affairs reviews the actions of the agent to evaluate in detail how produced the events that ended with the fatal outcome.

It all started around 12:40 p.m. on Saturday, when the man allegedly took over a vehicle in Amposta, before which the mossos arranged controls to close the roads at different points in the police regions of Terres de l'Ebre and Camp de Tarragona. .

When the car arrived at one of the checkpoints located on the A-7, the driver ignored the signals from the agents to stop, proceeded to turn around, began to drive in the opposite direction and tried to ram one of the police officers from the patrol that was chasing him, according to the brief statement released yesterday by the Mossos d'Esquadra.

One of the bullets went through the front window of the car and hit the driver's head, who was evacuated by the Emergency Medical System (SEM) to the aforementioned hospital in Tarragona.

The spokesman for SABE-Fepol, the majority union of the Mossos d'Esquadra, Toni Castejón, yesterday defended the agent's actions. In Castejón's opinion, the author of the shot acted to "protect his life and those of the rest" of the comrades who were in control in a situation "of total stress and great risk." Castejón wrote on his social networks that other police officers have lost their lives in similar situations.
