The Free Theater is looking for a new director

The Free Theater opens the call for the competition to choose its new direction. The bases, which have been made public this morning, establish that a profile "with experience in the theater and performing arts sector is being sought, who proposes a project for the Free Theater that responds to the founding goals and the strategic axes of sustainability of the Fundació Teatre Lliure – Public Theater of Barcelona".

Candidacies may be submitted until September 15 and the resolution of the contest will be made public in mid-October. The mandate of the new management will begin on February 1, 2024, just as the mandate of Juan Carlos Martel ends, for a period of five years, until January 31, 2029, plus three extendable years.

The current director, who was appointed by means of a public competition called as a result of the resignation of Lluís Pasqual, announced in April that, once his five-year term had expired, he was waiving the possibility of a possible renewal for another three years, "due to the difficult governance" of the Teatre Lliure.

The call also provides for a three-month interim position with the current director starting this November, so that the replacement can take place with all the guarantees. The payroll is established at 108,000 euros the first year, plus an amount of up to 25,000 in the event that the director or director is awarded some type of professional task, such as directing one of the shows of the season, maximum two.

These are the six requirements to access the selection process:

1. Nationality: Have the Spanish nationality, of other EU member states, or of states that by virtue of international treaties signed by the EU and ratified by the Spanish state, the free movement of workers is applicable to them. In the case of citizens from outside the EU, they will have to be in possession of a work permit in the EU.

2. Be in possession of a higher degree or equivalent artistic training.

3. Evidence of professional experience in the world of performing arts and/or in the organization and management of scenic projects (direction, interpretation, dramaturgy, programming, set design, etc.) through a verifiable explanatory curriculum.

4. Have spoken and written proficiency in Catalan, Spanish and English. The English language will be accredited by means of an English level title of B2 or higher, or by passing an English test to prove this requirement.

5. Provide experience and/or management and coordination capacity of work teams to achieve a fit between the management and the rest of the teams and departments, as well as in the relationship with the media.

6. Know, accept and commit to the founding principles of the Fundació Teatre Lliure and its vocation as a Public Theatre, with its Statutes, Regulations, Code of Ethics and other approved regulations.
