Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, whose country holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union, announced this Friday that he will convene an emergency meeting of the 27 Energy Ministers to address the current energy crisis, following the invasion of Ukraine by part of Russia and the escalation of prices in Europe.
The Czech presidency "will convene an emergency meeting of energy ministers to discuss specific emergency measures to deal with the energy situation," Petr Fiala said in a tweet that did not set a date for the meeting.
The EU is preparing for a complicated energy scenario this winter, in full tension with Russia that threatens to cut off gas supplies to the continent and the escalation of prices caused by the war in Ukraine.
With a view to dealing with the situation, the Twenty-seven before the summer agreed to have minimum reserves of at least 80% of their capacity by next November. At this time, according to data from the European Commission, in the EU as a whole they stand at 77%.
The plan also sets a threshold of 90% for the following winter seasons and a reserve level of 85% of the total storage capacity of the EU as a whole this year. Mandatory fill thresholds will expire in December 2025.
This is added to other energy saving and efficiency plans, with which the Member States have to implement measures to reduce consumption with the overall objective of saving 15%.
