The Madrid City Council will reinforce the preventive physiotherapy service provided in the network of Municipal Senior Centers, with an increase in the hours of care and the creation of a greater number of groups in which this activity is carried out.

The delegate of Social Policies, Family and Equality, José Fernández, announced this Monday from the Casa del Reloj Municipal Senior Center, in Arganzuela, that the City Council will invest 1.9 million euros in the new multi-year contract that will govern this program, which It will begin in September 2024 and end in June 2029.

The service is aimed at users who have the 'madridmayor.es card', which accredits them as members of the Municipal Senior Centers and which can be requested on the municipal website.

Specifically, it is intended for those users affected by some physical deterioration that makes physiotherapy care advisable. It is carried out in a group treatment modality, with one-hour sessions in which between 10 and 15 people participate.

Fernández highlighted that "preventive and maintenance physiotherapy preserves and improves the functional capacity" of the elderly, "making it easier for them to continue interacting with their environment in optimal physical conditions." He also highlighted that this activity "helps prolong the autonomy of older people in their homes", which is one of the "priority objectives" of the City Council.

With the planned expansion, the number of groups will increase to 256. As a novelty, two different attendance frequencies will be offered: 128 groups of three hours per week and another 128 of two hours per week. In 2023, more than 2,000 people participated in this activity, which was carried out in 31 Municipal Senior Centers in 16 different districts and was paid for through co-payment.
