Sofía Loren, underwent emergency surgery at the age of 89 after suffering a fall in the bathroom of her home in Switzerland

The iconic actress Sophia Loren, 89, has undergone emergency surgery after suffering a fall in the bathroom of her residence in Switzerland. Ella Loren reportedly suffered multiple fractures, including a severe femur fracture that required surgery. Despite "cautious optimism" about her recovery, the Italian actress is expected to need a long period of rehabilitation.

The actress planned to inaugurate a new branch of the Restaurante Sofía Loren restaurant chain in Bari on September 26. This event, as well as all of her future professional appearances, have been canceled until she can carry them out without compromising her health.

The news of Sophia Loren's accident and subsequent hospitalization has been confirmed by the restaurant chain that bears her name, which assured that the actress "will be back with us very soon" after "undergoing a period of convalescence followed by rehabilitation."

Loren is currently accompanied by her two sons, Edoardo and Carlo, according to the restaurant chain's statement. Her last public appearance before the incident was at an Armani fashion show at the Venice Film Festival on September 2.

Sophia Loren is one of the last living stars of Hollywood's Golden Age, most famous for her role in the 1961 film Two Women, which made her the first Oscar winner for a foreign-language film. In 2020 she filmed her latest film La vita davanti a sé in Bari, directed by her son Edoardo Ponti.

The Italian film legend celebrated her 89th birthday last week, and the American Film Institute considers her one of the "top legends" of cinema. This year she was also the star of an event to celebrate the centenary of the Verona Arena Opera Festival.
