Seven Spanish wineries, among the 100 best in the world

A total of seven Spanish wineries, three more than last year, have been among the 100 best in the world in the annual ranking prepared by the North American magazine Wine

There is only one Spanish winery, Viñedos Sierra Cantabria from La Rioja, which has not repeated this year among the 100 best in the world. The Suertes del Marqués, Tempos Vega Sicilia and Can Sumoi wineries do appear in 2023, as in the list last year. The American publication, which has more than 35 years of history and is specialized in the wine sector, compiles a list of the 100 best wineries based on the quality of the wines tasted during the year through a blind tasting procedure.

The general manager of Raventós i Blanc and Can Sumoi and representative of the 21st generation of the family that owns it, Pepe Raventós, stated in statements to the Comer La Vanguardia channel that "we are very excited about this double recognition and even more so in a year as difficult as this 2023, in which, due to the drought, we have plots with only 2,000 kilos of grapes per hectare”. Pepe Raventós assures that "the distinction, which we want to share with our winegrowers, spurs us to continue making the best possible wines and sparkling wines without losing sight of the fact that it is necessary to pay fair prices for the grapes."

The owner of Pago de los Abuelos, Nacho Álvarez, acknowledges to the Comer channel that "we are super excited about the fact that they have selected us on this list of international prestige." The owner of this small Bercian winery that produces 20,000 bottles a year, and that exports around 30% of its production, wants to share the prize with "our country people". For his part, the Vice President of Bodegas Muga, Manu Muga, told this channel that "we are very satisfied to be among the best 100 in the world of Wine

Can Sumoi, despite not having its own winery, has repeated for the second consecutive year on the list, while Raventós i Blanc from Sant Sadurní d'Anoia is the only Catalan sparkling wine producer, sharing space with seven other wine cellars world-wide effervescents, among which the renowned champagne makers Bollinger, Billecart-Salmon or Pierre Brocard stand out. From Raventós i Blanc it has been pointed out that "the magazine Wine

For its part, Can Sumoi, a project born in 2017 as a result of Pepe Raventós's passion for natural wines and his desire to recover varieties and vineyards lost in the heart of Baix Penedès, produces organic and natural wines "following the minimal intervention protocol without any oenological additives added during winemaking. Only a minimum of sulphites in the bottling, following the recent French Méthode Vin Nature regulation - there are no more than 30mg/L of sulphites per wine.” It is added that "it is a winery that, with only 6 years of life, once again demonstrates its international strength and positions the natural wines of Penedès and the xarel·lo and sumoll varieties on the world scene."
