Santa Coloma de Gramenet allocates more than 150 million to the cleaning and waste service

The Local Government Board of the City Council of Santa Coloma de Gramenet (Barcelonès Nord) has approved starting the tender for contracts for waste collection, street cleaning and maintenance of public roads. The contracting budget is 147,529,421 euros spread over two years, extendable for two more.

The new contract provides for the collection of the remaining fraction (I reject what is not recycled), street cleaning (water blasting, water-repellent...), selective household and commercial collection (organic, plastics, paper/cardboard, glass), waste bulky (collection service for old furniture and junk).

Within the framework of the Metropolitan Agreement for Zero Waste (2019), the new tender establishes the mechanisms and tools to achieve the recycling objectives of 55% in 2025, as set by the EU Waste Directive.

Apart from the four lots into which the cleaning and waste contracts are divided, there is also that for the conservation and maintenance of roads and sidewalks, which has a tender budget of 4,716,040.91 euros for four years, extendable to one further.

In total, more than 152 million euros are allocated to maintain and improve public space, an amount that is divided as follows:

The priority is set to improve the quality of public space in all neighborhoods, with criteria of sustainability and efficiency. This service contract will be the most important in the history of the City Council with an annual expenditure of approximately 18 million euros, which represents an increase of 20% compared to the current cost of services.

The document contemplates as new developments the increase in the frequency of selective collection, container washing, the creation of immediate action brigades and the incorporation of electric vehicles. The new commercial packaging collection service is created, reinforcing the organic, paper and cardboard collection teams in this area. Regarding street cleaning, the services are expanded with the incorporation of cleaning stains on the pavement with hydropressure and the new sidewalk scrubbing.

In order to comply with regulations and increase recycling percentages, the new contract is open to collection and control systems with door-to-door collection in certain areas or the closure of containers with identification of users.
