Jaume Giró resigns to appear in the Junts primaries for the generals

The ex-minister Jaume Giró has announced that he will not finally appear in the Junts primaries to choose the candidate who will lead the list with which the party will present itself in the general elections on July 23. Giró withdraws from the race for the Congress of Deputies and leaves the path clear for the current spokesperson for Junts, Míriam Nogueras.

Giró argues his decision, a few days after announcing in the Junts executive that he would opt to run, after speaking with the party's general secretary, Jordi Turull, and former president Carles Puigdemont. Both let him know that now is not the "opportune" time to start a primary process.

In a statement, Giró explains that he had thought about the decision to run, when everything indicated that the elections would take place in December. The advance and the urgency of calling the primaries have changed his initial plans, according to his writing.

"Opening primaries now is not the best, not the most opportune right now, especially when work is being done on the constitution of the city councils, on the one hand, and on trying to form a united front of the independence movement in Madrid, on the other" .

It should also be noted that the same day that the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced the call for the elections, through a tweet Puigdemont tried to settle any internal dispute by pointing to Nogueras, as the Junts candidate.

Giró also points out that the calendar is very tight due to the precipitation of the electoral call. "It is very difficult for the primaries to be held properly, with four days of campaigning and without public debates open to the militancy," says the former minister.

For this reason, he announces that, despite withdrawing from the primaries, he will continue to be part of the Junts executive. While he points out that he has "his own vision" about what role his party should have in Madrid. "As long as Catalonia is not an independent state, we can do more than claim independence," she points out.
