Iran detains four over Shiraz shrine attack

Iranian security forces have arrested four people for their alleged involvement in the shooting attack against the Shiite shrine in the southern city of Shiraz that caused one death and eight wounded last night.

"Four suspects have so far been arrested in connection with the attack and are under investigation," Seyed Kazem Mousavi, chief justice of Fars province, where Shiraz is located, said Monday.

Mousavi also indicated that the arrested attacker of the mausoleum is under judicial order and is being interrogated. One of the eight injured is in critical condition, according to Mousavi.

The attack occurred in the late afternoon when a gunman entered the Shah Cheragh shrine and began shooting at people he came across.

Videos shared by the Iranian media show people from the religious center running away in the presence of the attacker, who was subdued by police officers.

Fars Governor Mohamad Hadi Imaniyeh described the detainee as a "takfiri element," or Sunni radical. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi ordered an investigation to "quickly identify and punish the perpetrators" of the attack.

The Shahcheragh mausoleum already suffered an attack last October in which 13 people died and thirty were injured, which was then claimed by the jihadist group Islamic State (IS).

In mid-July, two men were hanged for taking part in that attack after confessing that they had been in contact with Islamic State in neighboring Afghanistan and that they helped organize the attack on the Shahcheragh shrine in Shiraz.
