Five motorhomes for tight budgets

More than a fashion, caravanning is a lifestyle that is increasingly established in our country. As the latest data from the Spanish Association of Caravaning Industry and Trade (Aseicar) shows, 34.8% more new motorhomes and campers were sold in Spain last September alone than in the same month of 2022.

The infinite number of advantages offered by traveling with the house in tow, compared to traditional tourism, and the wonderful spots that both Spain and the rest of Europe offer us are some of the factors that make recreational vehicles boom. Caravans for those looking for a mobile 'second home', more or less compact camper vans for the most versatile and even alternatives to traditional caravanning, such as roof tents or prefabricated modules to camp any vehicle. There are options for everyone.

But if, for you, space, comfort and equipment prevail, you may be considering buying a motorhome. And although we assume that they are not the cheapest recreational vehicles, it is still possible to find affordable motorhomes on the second-hand market.

To refine the search, the first thing will be to determine what needs we have in terms of space or certain extras and what is our maximum to spend, considering not only the purchase price, but also the insurance, consumption and maintenance.

Depending on their size, interior layout and level of equipment, there are three main types of motorhomes: nasturtiums, profiled or crossovers and integral ones. As a general rule, the former are the ideal option for the tightest budgets, since with simpler finishes, they are the access to a brand's range. The profiled ones are the middle ground, while the integral ones tend to be the most expensive, given that they have better equipment, high quality materials and the latest in technology and connectivity. These are five very interesting examples of different types of motorhomes on the market.

Nowadays it is not easy to find new models that fall below 55,000 or 60,000 euros, and you must always keep in mind that the final price may vary depending on the final configuration and distributor. However, a good starting point is the Pilote Pacific P600P.

This motorhome provides comfort and functionality, is based on the Fiat Ducato CSS and measures 5.96 meters long and 2.69 meters wide. It can accommodate up to four people to travel and eat, for two to spend the night. Among others, it has a gas stove with two burners, a 138-liter refrigerator, a sink, separate toilet and shower in a bathroom almost 1.50 meters deep. In addition, the bedroom has a comfortable 140 x 200 cm French bed with slatted base and Bultex mattress.

If what you are looking for is a profiled and versatile motorhome for traveling as a couple, the Benimar Tessoro 481 is the ideal one. With a length of 5.96 meters long and 2.30 meters wide, this 'made in Spain' model offers good finishes and many comforts: electric ceiling bed that descends to the height of the sofa, large L-shaped living room to accommodate visits, fully equipped kitchen with 140-liter refrigerator, vertical bottle rack, bathroom with extra-large independent shower and window, extra trunks and a long etcetera.

Going up a notch in size and price, another option to take into account is the Weinsberg CaraSuite Ford 550 MG, a 5.99 meter long profiled motorhome that is very spacious inside, as it offers up to four places to travel and sleep. It includes a comfortable garage with exterior access, a transverse double bed in the rear with a wardrobe underneath and a second bed on the roof ideal for a child or two small children, a full kitchen and a bathroom with a separate shower.

This integral motorhome with a Fiat chassis has a length of 7.40 meters. It allows up to four places to travel and sleep, although it is an ideal option for couples with a child looking for maximum comfort. With a spacious and bright interior due to its large glass surfaces, quality materials, full kitchen and 'spa-type' bathroom, it offers four different layouts so you can choose the one that best suits your tastes and needs.

For families with more than two children, one of the most interesting options is the Adria Coral XL Axess A 660 SL (five seats approved for traveling and sleeping). This 7.39 meter long nasturtium motorhome is one of the most popular novelties of the Slovenian brand this season. An authentic house on wheels with a large living room, L-shaped kitchen with 142-liter refrigerator, good cabinets and much more, which stands out for its attractive redesign and its complete equipment for a starting price of around 80,000 euros.
