Fine of 180,000 euros for five tourists for balconing in a hotel in Calvià

The Calvià City Council has imposed fines of 36,000 euros on five foreign tourists throughout this summer for balconying, the last of them this morning at 6:00 a.m., when he was detected trying to go to another room through the terrace, according to the Calvià Town Hall.

The tourists were identified and expelled from their hotels, including the one on Tuesday, within the framework of the decree against excess tourism that is in force in three areas of the Balearic Islands considered high-risk because they are the center of drunken tourism: Magaluf, in Calvià: Platja de Palma, in Palma, and the West End, in Sant Antoni de Eivissa.

The Local Police presented the complaints against these young people after being identified and each of them must pay the 36,000 euros of sanction established by the decree. From the Calvià City Council, in the hands of the PP and Vox after the elections of May 28, it is qualified that these are not the first fines of this nature that are imposed on tourists and add that a comparison is being made to compare the degree of laxity or hardness of each municipal team.

The decree that regulates excess tourism establishes these fines for those who do balcony, which basically consists of young people passing from one hotel room to another through the terraces. Hotel managers can also be sanctioned if they do not act against this practice and, in extreme cases, the sanction can end in a preventive closure of the establishment.

The general director of Activities and Commerce of the City Council, Juan Feliu, recalls that these senations have a powerful deterrent effect. "Balconing is not tolerable in our municipality; it is an irresponsible practice that can cause serious irreversible injuries and even death," he says.

This year has been particularly quiet in this regard and there have been no deaths due to falls from hotels, something that was common in recent years. Most of the falls are due to tourists trying to enter neighboring rooms through the balconies, but in most cases they are under the influence of alcohol, "This is not leisure; it is irresponsible very dangerous and it is not the image we want for our municipality", says Feliu.

The City Council informs that, in line with zero tolerance towards incivility and promoted excesses, the work of the Local Police agents in controlling the balcony has intensified, with this last case detected this Tuesday at 6 in the morning when a tourist jumped from one balcony to another, to whom the corresponding sanction and expulsion from the establishment has been applied.

Another of the measures that the City Council has implemented is to camouflage plainclothes policemen among tourists to try to abort crimes. Magaluf is a well-known leisure area for British youth tourism. Eight young tourists have been arrested in recent days for a group rape of an 18-year-old girl.
