Feijóo defends moderation in a Latin America that looks to the left

A message of moderation, centrality and political stability. Alberto Núñez Feijóo has started a trip to Latin America, where yesterday he met, in Montevideo, with the president of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle, who belongs to the same political family as the leader of the Popular Party and is one of the continent's leaders who resists the progressive wave. Argentina, Chile, Peru, Mexico, Colombia and, starting in January, Brazil after Lula da Silva's victory, have recently joined the club of countries with left-wing governments.

It is in this context that the visit of Alberto Núñez Feijóo takes place, who after disembarking in Uruguay, will take him to visit Argentina, Chile and Ecuador.

Feijóo assured yesterday, at a press conference held in the Uruguayan capital, that he is closely following the political changes taking place on the continent and that he is going to these countries to send a message “in favor of stability, of the political center, of democracy. representative and of the market economy, and with an express rejection of populism”, point out PP sources.

A message that he believes is necessary, especially in Chile, where "an overwhelming majority has rejected a left-wing populist constitution," underline the same sources.

The president of the PP will meet in Chile and Argentina with members of the opposition parties and their political spectrum, with whom he is interested in talking about the reconstruction of the center, which is also, he says, his commitment to Spanish politics.

Alberto Núñez Feijóo will dedicate a week to this Latin American journey where he will hold meetings with political leaders, businessmen, representatives of the Spanish community, the academic world and culture.

The president of the Popular Party places Latin America as a key player in Spain's foreign policy and considers relations with these countries to be a priority, which, in his opinion, "have been harmed in recent years by Spain's loss of international weight ”, and that he hopes to reverse if he reaches the presidency of the Government.

The president of the popular Spanish has set three main axes for this trip: the institutional one, which takes him to meet with the presidents of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle, and of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, and with the former presidents of Argentina, Mauricio Macri, and Chile, Sebastian Pinera. In addition, he will coincide with the governor of Buenos Aires and hold meetings with leaders of the Chilean opposition.

On the economic side, Alberto Núñez Feijóo will meet with local businessmen and directors of Spanish companies with interests in the area, and will take advantage of his stay to hold meetings with the communities of Spanish emigrants residing in these countries. The PP has 15,000 members in these countries, among which there is an important community of Galician origin that he knows well since he was president of this community. In fact, it is a tradition that candidates for the Xunta begin their electoral campaign by visiting this extensive community.

Feijóo will deliver two conferences at the Catholic University of Uruguay and the Development University, in Chile, as well as at the Torcuato di Tella University, in Buenos Aires, where he will be with the head of government of this city, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta. In the Argentine capital, Núñez Feijóo will receive the Illustrious Visitor distinction and will meet with the board of directors of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce of the Argentine Republic. In Chile, the PP leader will meet with representatives of the center-right Chile Vamos coalition, which has been in opposition since leftist Gabriel Boric won.
