Falcons vs pigeons in Granada

A falconer with three falcons and several trap cages is already working on the eradication of pigeons from the city of Baza (Granada) due to the problems of dirt and deterioration suffered, mainly, by the streets of the center and the roofs of houses due to of the excessive proliferation of these birds.

As indicated by the City Council in a note, after carrying out several previous actions to eliminate these animals, the Departments of the Interior and Maintenance have put the matter in the hands of this falconer, an expert in wildlife control.

The intention of this professional, who usually works at airports and military bases, is that the pigeons "become aware that the hamlet of Baza is not a safe area for them or to establish their nests here and they prefer to leave in search of other spaces".

At the same time, a series of cages will be installed in different parts of the municipality in which they will first be baited for a few days and then captured for disposal.

For sixty days, the falconer will carry out alternative marking flights in different parts of the city with his falcons, specifically with a female peregrine falcon and a hybrid of a gyrfalcon and a saker.

When taking flight, the surrounding pigeons are scared away and disappear from the place, they are frightened by the presence of a predator that can kill them.

At the same time, ten trap cages have been prepared in which the pigeons must be trapped. To do this, for a few days they will be given food inside these cages until a time comes when the mechanism of this instrument will end up retaining them inside.

The cages will be placed on the upper floors of certain homes where these animals usually go to rest, nest or simply to escape the cold. In this sense, we have had the collaboration of some owners who have given their permission.

The intention is that these actions will be carried out again in six or seven months to further deepen the eradication of pigeons. According to first estimates, between 100 and 150 specimens could be collected each week.
