Cruise ships will not be supplied with water in Barcelona

The emergency phase declaration issued by the Generalitat forces water consumption to be limited to several sectors, thus affecting the maritime tourism sector.

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) groups together 98% of cruise passengers bound for the port of Barcelona. In recent years, the port, the port community and the cruise industry have developed proposals related to the commitment and sustainability to reducing water consumption, estimated at 0.09% of that of the city of Barcelona.

Among the measures adopted are technological investments aimed at reducing the supply of fresh water or the reuse and production of water from ships, which helps them produce more than 90% of the fresh water needed. The CLIA has reduced its consumption drastically in recent years. Thus, data for 2022 show that less than 30% of ships had to be supplied with water.
